3-Day Breast Cancer Walk
Cupertino-to-San Francisco
July 28-30, 2000
(cont.)

DAY THREE - Sunday

Route - Skyline College to Moscone Recreation Center, 19.4 miles
Closing Ceremonies begin at 5:00 pm at Marina Green in San Francisco

Does brushing your teeth at breakfast in 50 degree, misty weather get you excited?

60 miles and no blisters... you gotta love those mizunos!

But not everyone was so lucky.

You can't say enough about the volunteer crew, especially Grab-N-Go "F"

I met Jason and Jamie (Marcia's childhood friend's daughter) on the Marina Green, and we watched Marcia and the 3,000 walkers, crew and volunteers march onto the Green to the inspirational music playing from the huge speakers set up for the Closing Ceremonies. It was very moving and exciting to see them all march in arm-in-arm, 10 abreast. It took over 20 minutes for all of them to fill the field. Marcia's shin problem magically went away earlier today and she was feeling fine. In fact, when we walked to dinner (yes we walked right from the Closing Ceremonies), I couldn't keep up with her.

There's no way to describe reuniting with the 3,000 walkers... it was just magic!

I don't know where their energy came from after walking 60 miles in 3 days...
but I do know that Karen wore a shirt with her mother's picture every day, and
I know that surviving breast cancer allowed Susan to walk with her daughter Jessica.

I think the pictures say it all.

Among the 3,000 walkers, the breast cancer survivors all wore pink shirts.
(can you pick out Susan in the back with the visor?)

Jamie, Marcia, Jason and Joe
Our hope is that this horrible disease will not touch us...
and the efforts of everyone these past 3 days will go a long way to helping protect us.

Marcia's comment right before falling asleep Sunday night was:
how nice her own bed, tub and bathroom are.

[Note to Jane and Darlene - do you have any extra styrofoam cups?]
