Note to AOL Users

AOL's Browser and Image Problems

America Online (AOL) provides a proprietary Web browser to its customers. AOL's graphics compression system can cause color bands or black blocks in JPEG images. You can disable graphics compression in the AOL browser.

Step 1. While signed on to AOL, click on the "My AOL" icon.
(For AOL 3.0+ users, click on the "MEMBERS" icon. Then follow steps 2-6.)

Step 2. Choose the option titled "Preferences."

Step 3. You will see a box full of varying icons. Click on the one titled "WWW".

Step 4. You will then see the box titled "AOL Internet Properties." Click on the section titled "WEB GRAPHICS."

Step 5. The box presents an option, "Use compressed graphics."
The default setting has a check included by the option.
Be sure to leave this box empty. You do not want to use compressed graphics.

Step 6. Exit AOL completely and then restart AOL again, the changes you have made will now take effect.

AOL Allows Stand-alone Browser

America Online software version 3.0 and later allows you to run a stand-alone Web browser:

Step 1. Connect to America Online as you normally do.

Step 2. Launch a stand-alone Web browser. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator can be used.

Step 3. It may be helpful to select "Hide America Online" from the Applications menu at the top far right of the screen.
