Cupertino-to-San Francisco
July 28-30, 2000

DAY ONE - Friday

Check in at 6:00 am
Opening Ceremonies at 7:05 am
Walk starts at 7:30 am
Route - DeAnza College to Carlmont High School, 23.5 miles:
Today's journey starts at DeAnza College, named after the Spanish explorer who established an encampment in Cupertino in 1776. The walk winds through Silicon Valley and passes by Stanford University. Final steps of Day 1 leave off in mid-peninsula on the Avenue de las Pulgas (English translation: Avenue of Fleas).

Joe and Stephen (yes, Stephen got up at 5:30am to support his mother) drove Marcia and Darlene to the Opening Ceremonies where about 2,500 walkers and 500 crew filled the athletic field. The energy and camaraderie were high, and the speech given by the event manager was very moving and uplifting... tears were easy to find.

Entering the field this morning for Opening Ceremonies

Mingling

Stretching and having fun

Wearing their love

Holding hands and thinking of those lost to breast cancer

Supporters and crew

Amazing sight!

They're off !!!

I drove along the route today, but I couldn't find Marcia. The line of walkers stretched for well over 5 miles. And all along the road, people were cheering them on, waving banners, and honking horns as they drove by. It was very exciting and I'm sure wonderful for the walkers to see such an outpouring of support.

Hey wait a minute... does this look like they're struggling?

I just spoke with Marcia. She called me from the evening camp area. The day was awesome, but left her with some sore shins after walking 24 miles. She was going to take a shower and eat dinner. Tomorrow they leave just before 8:00am. I can't wait to hear how she enjoyed sleeping in a tent, waking up in the cold, and not having her own bathroom to get ready for the day. I really respect the walkers and crew for what they are doing.

Day One is over. Time to relax... wherever you can.
